Grupo Bronco

Grupo Bronco, a renowned Mexican grupero band, traces its roots back to Apodaca, Nuevo León. The band's innovative blend of regional Mexican music during the 1980s and 1990s catapulted them to international fame. The original members—José Guadalupe "Lupe" Esparza, Ramiro Delgado, Javier Villareal, and José Luis "Choche" Villareal—crafted music that not only topped charts but also left an indelible mark on the genre. Bronco's journey began as "Los Broncos de Apodaca," formed and led by Lupe Esparza. The band's early days were marked by Chicano music influences, with a repertoire that included cumbias and boleros. Inspired by the Broncos de Reynosa baseball team, they adopted the name "Broncos" for their band, signifying their connection to Apodaca. Their professional debut in Agua Fría, Nuevo León, marked the beginning of a remarkable career. The release of "Quiero Decirte" and "Grande de Caderas" on radio station XEOK laid the foundation for their musical trajectory.
In 1979, now officially known as Bronco, they recorded their first complete album for Fama, featuring the hit song "Sergio el Bailador." The departure of members and the addition of Ramiro Delgado in 1985 marked a new chapter, leading to the release of the successful album "Bronco Super Bronco" in 1987.
The group faced a tragic incident in 1987 at Salon la Fama in Monterrey, where a stampede resulted in injuries and fatalities during their performance. The track "Cumbia Triste" on the 1989 album "Un Golpe Mas" paid tribute to the victims. Bronco's international breakthrough came with the 1989 album "A Todo Galope," featuring the hit single "Que No Quede Huella." They toured extensively in the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela, and Peru, solidifying their status as a prominent grupero group.
In 1993, they gained further fame with the soap opera "Dos Mujeres, un Camino," contributing the opening song of the same name. The album "Pura Sangre" achieved gold and platinum status throughout Latin America. Bronco bid farewell in 1997 after a farewell tour, with their last concert at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City drawing a massive crowd of 100,000 fans. By the end of 1997, they had earned 37 gold and 20 platinum records.
In 2003, they made a triumphant return as "El Gigante de America," unable to use the name Bronco due to legal disputes. Despite challenges, they continued to release albums, with their comeback album "Siempre Arriba" in 2003. The band faced adversity with the tragic kidnapping and murder of original member Erick Garza in 2012 and the passing of José Luis Villarreal in the same year.
After legal negotiations in 2017, Grupo Bronco reclaimed the right to perform as "Bronco" in Mexico. The band faced internal challenges, including lawsuits and member changes, but continued to thrive.
In 2019, the Spanish language television series "Bronco: La Serie" aired, depicting the band's history based on real events and characters.
As of 2021, with a new lineup and Arsenio Guajardo as the keyboardist and accordionist, Grupo Bronco remains a significant force in the music industry, having sold over 12 million records and continuing to captivate audiences with their unique brand of grupero music.
